Science@Cal is proud to present a series of free public science lectures on the third Saturday of every month. These talks are given by renowned UC Berkeley scientists and aimed at general audiences. Talks take place on the UC Berkeley campus at 11 am. Doors open thirty minutes before the talk and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Each talk is planned to last an hour, plus time for at least a few questions at the end.
A Berkeley man has died more than a month after he suffered a head injury when he crashed his scooter on the Cal campus, authorities said. UC Berkeley Police said the man was found unconscious on Dec. 1 near Moffitt Library in the center of campus, after witnesses said he fell off his scooter at high speed and hit his head. The man was unconscious but breathing at the time, Sgt. Jacob Westlie wrote in an email, and was taken to a hospital.
OAKLAND A 36-year-old man was charged with week with attacking two UC Berkeley police officers, slicing the hand of one, while the officers attempted to take a 12-inch knife from the suspect, according to court records. Xavier Shirley, of Oakland, was charged with assaulting a police officer a felony as well as possessing a dangerous weapon at school, and a misdemeanor count of battery upon another peace officer.
Soon after opening the shop, which he called The Ink Stone, an architect friend of Smith's was bemoaning the fact that he had to drive to Richmond to pick up blueprints. Again, Smith saw an opportunity, and began printing blueprints at his store, as well as carrying drafting supplies, balsa and basswood for model making, and other architectural supplies.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday it is investigating how UC Berkeley prepared for a Turning Point USA event Monday night that sparked intense protests on campus. In two letters posted on X and addressed to university officials, the department's Civil Rights Division requested campus communication records related to how the university prepared security for the event and responded to the protests.

UCLA, which earned the No. 1 spot last year, was bumped down to the second-best public university in the nation, just behind the University of Michigan, in Niche's 2026 Best Colleges in America rankings, published Monday. ( Niche considers factors such as student reviews, academics, professors, the campus, diversity, safety and student life.) The only other California school that cracked the top 10 on the list of best public universities was UC Berkeley at No. 9.
